Last week’s meeting was quite a success. Many of our volunteers have returned and many new volunteers joined us. Welcome! Bienvenida! Bienvenue! Welkom! Benvenuto! Välkommen!
Just a quick recap of last week’s meeting:
A warm welcome from our new President, Terrill Martinez and new Board Members.
There was a brief summary of our programs: Soup Kitchen, Done in a Day, Music Saturdays, Mi Bebé y Yo, Casi Como Nuevo and First Impressions.
Be on the lookout for an announcement regarding the Welcome Cocktail that will be held October 26th.
The League voted in favor for creating a JLGDL scholarship to be awarded to a college student.
A vote will be held determining which fundraiser we will do this year: Casino Night, Fashion Show or Women’s Conference.
Mi Bebé y Yo
The first visit to the Hospital Civil was a huge success! Thank you to Liza Rojas for continuing to head this program and the volunteers who dedicate their time. This program has been running successfully for 30 years thanks to our volunteers. We have made lifelong connections and friendships with some of the nurses at the hospital. We hope to continue to share love and support to new mothers and lots of hugs with their babies. The next visit is October 2nd.
In August, we continued to work in the community of San Juan de Ocotan. This year, the Junior League of GDL will continue to serve once a month while HP has also agreed to serve once a month. It is wonderful that we have the opportunity to share this program with other corporations. The groundbreaking for the new playground will be October 1st! Please join us for our next SK visit October 25th, 4 pm to 6 pm.
Twice a month we continue to visit the casa hogar, Sueños y Esperanzas. This program gives us the opportunity to connect with the children. Now that they are accustomed to our visits, we are greeted with smiles and excitement! Thanks to the work of the volunteers and the instructor (Malala), the children continue to grow. We are in need a of 4 more volunteers. There are two teams, each team visits the casa hogar once a month. Please contact Catherine Russler if you are interested.
In addition to the wealth of information regarding the League, our intentions and program updates, Eliza Osher gave a talk on:
Equanimity and Mindful Volunteering
Setting an Intention, for increased motivation, mindfulness and effectiveness
Recognizing equanimity and connection with others as a source of sustainable happiness while volunteering.
